Suppose a student wants to translate"My friend didn't turn up." into Bengali, using a dictionary that gives —
turn = ঘোরা and up = উঁচুতে
Then the student tries to join together those Bengali words and gets"আমার বন্ধু উঁচুতে ঘোরে নি।" which makes no sense.
However the true meaning of that English sentence is "আমার বন্ধু উপস্থিত হয় নি।".
So, how can we figure that out when we join the word 'turn' that means " ঘোরা ", and the word 'up', that means " উঁচুতে " , the two words together will mean " উপস্থিত হওয়া " ?
The truth is, we cannot figure that out . The problem here came from using a bad dictionary, wordlist or website to find the translation, or more likely, from using a good one badly.
A good dictionary will tell us that "turn" alone means " ঘোরা ", but "turn up" means " উপস্থিত হওয়া ".
